Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed remarkable nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a topsy-turvy last day of play.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai entered the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final hole.
Playoff Decider
This led to a play-off at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.

It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Performances
Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to make up, coming up a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an superb last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
