Though mainly known as an government critic, Odinga served as head of government in 2008 and also formed a political pact with the leader last year in a public service characterized by changing partnerships.
He commanded intense commitment among supporters, particularly in his Luo community based in the country's west, many of whom maintain he was deprived of the presidency by electoral fraud.
