Correctional Facilities Won't Be Fixed Immediately, Minister Says, as Law Enforcement Hunt For Two Men Incorrectly Released
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has labeled the situation as a "total shambles," speaking earlier today.
Appearing on a broadcast interview, he referenced remarks made by David Lammy after a recent inmate discharge, stating that the minister would establish stricter verifications.
"There was a delay of six days for the prison service supposedly to even become aware this occurred" and inform the police, the shadow official explains, "who are now a week behind in the search to find him."
The opposition figure condemns the minister's handling during recent parliamentary questions and alleges him of a "complete dereliction of duty."
Addressing incorrect prison releases in broader terms, Jenrick underlines that "each mistaken discharge [...] is unacceptable."
He admits there were similar incidents under the previous administration, but says the figure "has risen significantly" under Labour.
Calling for additional correctional facilities to be built, he continues: "What the British people want to see now are adequate safeguards put in place."
"This represents a specific administrative failure by the justice department overseen by David Lammy," the opposition member says.
