The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
