Mediated discussions aimed at reaching a comprehensive deal on a American ceasefire proposal to end the war in Gaza have begun in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh.

Middle Eastern and regional officials have reported that the sessions are concentrating on "establishing the groundwork" for a potential swap that would see the liberation of all captured Israelis in compensation of a number of detained Palestinians.

Hamas has said it accepts the negotiation framework in part, but has not responded to several crucial requirements - including its weapons surrender and political participation in Gaza.
