Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.

The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership delayed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the plan.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the discussions revealed that an late session of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the deal.

He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to reduce the differences between the two sides.

Critical Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
  • After-conflict management of the territory

Public Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until each abducted person are released none of us will be secure."

"After we see everybody home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to recover," she added.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel states 48 continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do every compromise needed for the hostages to return. But we really want promises that we will be secure."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of the population desire the hostilities to finish in as payment for the freedom of the captives.

Gaza Circumstances

At the site of Nova festival, mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli shelling continued.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the dawn of that day in the western district, Rimal and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.

"As the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.

"We are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Every second we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."

Medical Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis reported two more fatalities had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south region, health workers reported.

Gaza's health ministry announced a significant number of the {territ
