New Year's Revelers Told to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Expected Across the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a chilly commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Forecasts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, following last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the weather service.
Celebrations Under Open but Frosty Skies
Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be chilly, making warm wraps vital, as per forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- People are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.
Readings Expected to Plummet Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Public Health Warnings Issued
In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this meant the weather was likely to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a expected uptick in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
