Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Chief Executive Exits After Move Towards Fried Chicken.

The boss of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached maximum pizza demand while expanding the chain into chicken products has been removed after disagreements with its board.

Executive Change

Rennie is exiting after just two years in the top role, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a long-term chief.

Rennie, who was with the company for a substantial period, had aimed to redirect Britain's largest pizza takeaway chain towards fried chicken, remarking in a recent interview there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted chicken was the quickest rising protein in the world.

Governance Disagreements

It is understood that there was disagreement between the CEO and the directors over his strategy and business vision, although Domino's release said he was departing “by mutual agreement”.

Recent Brand Launch

In the autumn, Domino's unveiled its poultry offering – which Rennie referred to as a “significant new phase” for the group – and is piloting it in over 200 locations in the North West region and the province.

While the firm is still intending to launch it across its extensive network in the coming year as intended, it regards fried chicken as an addition to its main pizza offerings.

Leadership Comment

Ian Bull, the company chair, stated: “The board believes that there are a series of prospects to boost expansion and profitability in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing selecting the right chief executive to lead the careful implementation of that expansion plan.”

Industry Difficulties

Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said transactions fell by 1.5% in the Q3. In August, it cautioned that the takeaway market had “grown more challenging” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the period before the government announcement and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a significant fall in interim earnings.

Other pizza operators are also facing challenges. Another major chain disclosed the closure of multiple locations a last month, after the company behind its British operations faced financial collapse.

Health Efforts

Responding to market shifts towards healthier eating, the company has rolled out lower-calorie options, such as its thin-crust selection of bakes below 400 kcals as well as vegan and allergy-friendly pizzas. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 kcals. A family cheese pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a small has 909 calories.

Interim Management

Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and was formerly with the gaming group a well-known operator. It is believed that she is not seeking to take on the CEO position permanently.

She commented: “Our team has a several active development and performance initiatives that we will be concentrating on carrying out at pace.”

Frampton noted these comprised ongoing development on the company's logistics network and menu innovation, and its rewards program.

Domino's is also lacking a full-time CFO until 16 March, when a new appointee comes aboard from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. In the meantime, Snow acts as acting financial officer.
