Senate Approves Legislation to Release Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of official records related to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a reversal by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House relented after months of trying to block the bipartisan effort involving a scandal that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, expediting the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. The survivors have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer said in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”

Next Steps

This legislation next goes to the president for his approval. He stated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Although Trump has for months rejected the uproar over the official management of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the weekend, and said he would give his assent if it reaches his desk.

Support and Opposition

The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were seated in a viewing area, applauded after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he worried the measure would make public personal information of individuals involved, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
