The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the hit series wrapping up—and a second season already in development—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
