The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned church.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."

The central mechanic involves managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
