The current recalibration envisages synchronising with EU standards in three key areas to help the smoother movement of trade: food and farm exports, power, and emissions trading.

A prominent industry organisation last month published a list of additional asks in different fields to aid exporters navigate new bureaucratic hurdles that has impacted the goods trade.

Its own survey found that a majority of member firms felt that the existing agreement was impeding sales growth.

A range of additional sectors could, potentially, see a comparable strategy – convergence with internal market standards – in exchange for lowering trade obstacles across industry, in vehicles, industrial chemicals, or for example in VAT procedures.

EU Response

European capitals were unimpressed by the limited scope in earlier discussions, notably the UK dismissal of ideas floated by some commentators regarding the effective return of UK products to the internal market.

Domestically, the governing party also foresees being pressured on European policy not just one political rival, but potentially a further party, which is targeting its key electoral areas in local votes.
