The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately after his electoral win in November.

"The choice was based on our family's safety and the imperative to directing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, it will always live within me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his modest Astoria apartment.

Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
